Hunterian

Here's a visual summary of my trip to the Hunterian a few weeks ago. The place was sort of old and dusty but that gave it a kind of authenticity that I miss at a lot of modern museums and galleries. Unfortunately most of it was closed off for renovations.

There were a lot of ethnic artifacts, body parts in formaldehyde, and stuffed siamese animals and a giant skeleton. Places like this always make me wish I had more space and time.

Vertigo

I watched Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) for the first time a little a while back and it left my mind tingling. Or itching. One of the two.

The film moves slowly and the craziness of it, and of it's main character 'Scottie' doesn't hit you till after he is released from the sanitarium and insists on making-over his new girlfriend to look exactly like the girl who's death put him there in the first place. Any sympathy you may have felt for him before (unlikely though, as he was having an affair with his friend's wife) quickly melts away, and why the girl would go along with it is beyond me.

Despite the pitfalls in the plot, the art direction was what kept me watching, and there were some amazing shots. I especially liked the creepy shot of Midge's self-portrait and the trippy nightmare sequence.

There are definitely scenes that I would go back to, but as a whole it just didn't work for me. Saul Bass' poster still makes my top ten though.

If I had 81 dollars..

I would go ahead and buy this bowl from Natural Selection Studio. Who knew wood could go all psychadelic?

Culture Counts

UNESCO held a poster competition for 2010, International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. Of the 1187 posters submitted, 30 were chosen to take part in an exhibition at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in May. Among them was my poster:
